Communications Specialist I (208307)

Position Summary: Incumbent will learn policies, procedures and develop competency in the following areas: Operation of a highly complex multi-channel satellite repeater radio system to maintain contact between KHP troopers, other state, local and federal agencies, and fire and ambulance personnel in a wide geographic area. Accessing, operating, interpreting, and disseminating information sent and received from data entry terminals, NCIC, NLETS, KCJIS, DOR, ALERT, the SPIDER computer system, EPIC and the National Auto Theft Bureau to exchange information on a worldwide basis and to provide support to a variety of law enforcement functions. Competency in answering multiple emergency telephone lines to take information pertaining to criminal activity, life threatening situations, Safe School Hotline, and vehicle accidents. Coordinates the response of emergency and/or maintenance personnel and equipment to prohibit further threat and destruction of life and property.

Qualifications: Education: High School diploma or equivalent Licensing: Valid KS Driver’s License

Minimum Qualifications: Hearing correctable to a range, that will allow normal radio and telephone conversation with field units (Trooper) and the public. Must successfully pass prescribed hearing, vision and typing tests prior to employment. Must submit to and pass a thorough background investigation with no felony record, no selling of marijuana or controlled substance, good moral ethics, etc. Must have ability to make rapid independent decisions in a highly stressful environment, accurately type alphabetical and alpha-numerical figures with reasonable speed (40 wpm), get along with all kinds of people and personalities, control emotions and be cognizant of several things/events happening at one time. Must have above average communication skills, able to write and read comprehensively.

Preferred Qualifications: Two-year experience as a dispatcher in public safety / communications may qualify for CSII level.

Post-Offer: Must successfully, within 6 months of employment and biannually thereafter, complete and pass a written examination in the practices and procedures of the FBI’s NCIC system for mandatory certification.
