Position Summary: Conducts foot, bicycle, & vehicle patrols, to ensure safety and security to the areas, employees, & citizens. Performs the basic functions & duties of a police officer, which includes the enforcement of statutes & administrative rules & regulations of the State of Kansas. While on patrol, issues citations & warnings, makes arrests, responds to calls for service, conducts vehicle inspections, investigates motor vehicle accidents, assists disabled motorists, provides emergency medical services, & reports road and weather conditions. Utilizes Agency computer programs and software. Provides security during special assignments/events & provides security to State agencies. Upholds the United States & Kansas Constitutions, Bill of Rights, Kansas Statutes Annotated, city ordinances, departmental rules & regulations & general principles of police work, at all times. Operates police rated/agency vehicles in a safe & efficient manner & within the guidelines established by the Kansas Highway Patrol. Multitasks during emergency/high stress situations. Provides traffic control & renders first aid & assistance to citizens & motorists when necessary. Provides courtroom testimony & depositions, conducts money escorts for State agencies, & assists local agencies with high-priority calls. Provides protection & safety to the Governor’s family & residence.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: Professional contact with government officials, legislators, dignitaries, state employees, visitors, & all other citizens, to uphold the image & reputation of the Kansas Highway Patrol. Utilizes good communication skills when making contact with members of the community, in order to maintain control of each & every situation. Builds & maintains good working relations with other law enforcement agencies. Maintains annual law enforcement officer certification, as required by Kansas statute. Qualifies with duty weapons quarterly & develops skills and proficiency in the use of all Agency issued weapons & equipment. Maintains certification in first aid principles & is skilled in their application. The greatest hazard is the real potential of life-threatening injuries from the people we contact, emergency vehicle operations, & the potential for becoming involved in situations requiring a response to resistance, to include the use of firearms. Personal risks, besides those mentioned, may include exposure to hazardous materials & disease; walking on a public roadway when it is not customary, or being struck by another vehicles when we, by necessity, expose ourselves/vehicle to protect other persons and/or property. Emotional stress comes with being a first responder to life or death situations/incidents.

Qualifications:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent
Licensing: Valid KS Driver’s License

Necessary Special Requirements: Certification as a law enforcement officer by the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Commission must be obtained prior to the employee being placed on permanent status.
Must be a US citizen and at least 21 years of age. Must submit to an extensive background investigation. At time of appointment, must take & pass a drug screening test & required to pass a physical exam administered by the hiring agency. This class requires the use of a firearm for law enforcement duties and therefore, candidates cannot have been convicted of, and must be free of any diversions from, a felony or misdemeanor domestic violence crime as set forth in 18 U.S.C.922 (d) (9) and (g) (9).

Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to render credible testimony in a court of law. Must have skills and abilities to deal with people effectively on a daily basis in less than ideal situations, remain calm and in control during emergency situations, and problem solve.

Preferred Qualifications: One year of experience in the criminal justice field.
Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Must be able to speak clearly, listen & comprehend verbal & written instructions; run, walk, kneel, stand for extended periods of time, sit for extended periods of time, climb stairs, get in & out of a vehicle, bend, squat, reach, push, pull, drive a vehicle, grasp, key for typing & occasionally lift up to 75 lbs.
