The Fleet Diesel Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing diesel-powered fleet vehicles and construction equipment. Duties include inspection and diagnostics, repair and maintenance, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, collaboration with other mechanics for a variety of projects, and research and record keeping for WaterOne’s fleet vehicles. The Fleet Diesel Mechanic strives to minimize down time and help ensure that all WaterOne vehicles and equipment are safe to operate.
Pay range for this position is $28.85/hr to $43.27/hr. Compensation for the selected candidate will depend on candidate qualifications and experience as related to the position requirements.
Essential Functions

Perform standard vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance.
Diagnose complex and detailed mechanical and electronic issues utilizing diagnostic software when applicable.
Complete complex and detailed mechanical inspections and repairs with minimal supervision.
Utilize enterprise resource programs to update and maintain company vehicle mechanical maintenance records.
Maintain high safety standards in the work environment and all job-related responsibilities. Assist in housekeeping of shop.
Maintain all assigned hand tools.
Perform welding repairs with acetylene and electric arc equipment.
Perform preventative maintenance on light duty vehicles, , heavy duty trucks, heavy equipment, portable pumping units and portable air compressors.
Perform tire repair and replacement on light duty and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
Perform HVAC repair on light duty and heavy duty vehicles and heavy equipment.
Initiate process to order repair parts as needed.
Maintains technical knowledge and continuously strives to learn emerging technology and techniques related to this role, including new types of equipment, computer systems, electronics, and diagnostic and repair tools.
Comply with the Fleet department policies and procedures.
Maintain punctual and satisfactory attendance.
Other Duties
Provides cross-functional training experiences to co-workers, as needed.
Participates in the team on-call rotation for after-hours fleet emergencies.
May be requested to serve in the role of acting Supervisor-Fleet Mechanics periodically.
Performs other job duties as assigned.
Required Education, Skills & Experience
Associate’s degree from a vocational-technical trade school in Diesel Technology plus 1 year work experience as a Diesel technician.
Note: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted to meet qualifications above.
Must possess a valid Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) with tanker and air brakes endorsements or be able to obtain one within 90 days of hire. Must continuously meet WaterOne driving standards.
Ability to maintain a safe work area and constant attention to safe work.
Ability to operate a variety of types of light and heavy duty vehicles and heavy equipment.
Experience with diagnostic and analyzing equipment.
Knowledge of automotive computer systems, electronic and electrical systems, hydraulics, emission control equipment and air brake systems.
Entry level computer skills, including experience with or the ability to learn Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook. Must have the ability to learn new software applications.
Proficiency in reading and comprehension operating manuals, equipment and chemical labels, and other written materials.
Requires the ability to navigate online repair programs such as AllData, Cummins Insight and Quickserve, Ford IDS, Oasis and FDRS and Diesel Laptop.
Available for overtime and after-hours call outs as necessary.
Preferred Education, Skills & Experience
Welding experience, including arc and gas welding.
