Position Summary: Builds new vehicles by installing necessary equipment in order to prepare them for issue. This is accomplished by determining and gathering parts/equipment needing to be installed and installing that equipment. Troubleshoots, adjusts and aligns parts and system components, fitting where necessary to ensure satisfactory operation of interrelated systems. Performs inspection and drives vehicles to ensure proper performance. May act as a teacher and/or trainer to improve the vehicle operators knowledge of the operation of their vehicle and equipment and preventives maintenance. Diagnoses mechanical or electrical problems or failures to determine the exact nature and extent of repairs needed by utilizing specialized testing equipment, such as engine analyzers, test benches, pressure gauges, voltmeters, dial indicators, micrometers, etc. and performs visual and auditory checks. Performs inspection and drives vehicle to ensure proper performance. Performs a wide range of repairs and troubleshooting on all vehicles. Performs maintenance on vehicles including but not limited to; changing fluids and filters; installing and balancing tires; replacing break pads, rotors, calipers and their related parts; disassembling rear axle assemblies and replacing gears and bearings; performing engine tune up; installing push bumpers; removing and installing internal and external parts; repairing window regulators and motors; removing and installing seats and other interior components. Performs full range of overhaul and repair work of vehicles. Performs major and minor overhaul and repair on engine assemblies, fuel systems including carburetors and fuel injection, fuel pumps, suspension systems, starters, gauges, alternators, gear boxes and cooling systems. Salvages wrecked vehicles in order to retrieve Patrol owned parts and equipment that are interchangeable with other vehicles. Utilizes gas and electric welding equipment, painting or other relate skills to complete necessary repairs. Operates the agency’s flatbed recovery tow truck to travel throughout the state to recover wrecked or disabled vehicles to the fleet shop.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: Maintains cleanliness of shop and personal work area by disposing of trash, sweeping, mopping and performing other task necessary. Maintains shop records, work orders and parts orders as necessary. Informs supervisor when stock items are needed. Abides by all shop safety rules and ensures all shop equipment is kept clean and in good working condition. Completes special projects and performs other duties as assigned. Assists other employees in their work unit as needed. Regular, reliable, dependable, performance is an essential function. Daily use of telephone, calculator, vehicles, reference materials, vehicle hoist, fluid flushing machine, brake lathe, tire mounting and balancing equipment, air and electric operated tools and hand tools. Occasional use of; computer and related software, scanner and other electronic testing equipment, fork lift, and power washer.

Qualifications:
Education: High School diploma or equivalent
Licensing: Valid Driver’s License

Minimum Qualifications: One year of experience in automotive and/or diesel mechanics to meet the needs of the agency. Ability to communicate orally and in writing with all levels of agency personnel, the public and other law enforcement personnel; establish and maintain effective working relationships; and read, comprehend and apply understanding of repair manuals and diagrams.

Preferred Qualifications: Two years basic automotive mechanical and electrical system knowledge.

Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Must be able to lift 75 lbs; capable of inspecting vehicles and detecting visible and/or audible defects when evaluating it’s condition; and able to bend, stretch, twist, squat, stoop, push, pull or reach with body, arms and/or legs and get in and out of vehicles. Must submit to an extensive background investigation.
