CAD Drafter / Technician

The ideal candidate would possess experience in using Civil Engineering applications in AutoCAD Civil 3D.

Key Responsibilities

•Will perform primarily civil drafting using AutoCAD including civil site layout, stormwater, water, waste water, roads and streets; May also do some structural CAD drafting

•Will create high quality maps and data for reports to support FEMA floodplain mapping and other engineering projects using ESRI suite of products

•Prepares drawings and other report documents under direct supervision

•Under close supervision, and according to established standards and procedures, performs detailing, redrawing, lettering, and tracing of elementary engineering drawings from given data

•Produces finished artwork in the form of flow charts, schedules, organization charts, viewgraphs, site maps, cross sections as well as technical charts, graphs and logs

•Prepares detailed drawings, working plans, and presentation graphics from notes, verbal instructions, and rough or detailed sketches

•Makes basic engineering computations relative to layout and organization of project

•Operating efficiently between CAD software for data conversions

•Occasional fieldwork for project data collections

•Operates plotter to transfer developed drawings from disk or tape storage to reproducible medium

Skills / Qualifications

•Associates degree in related field or vocational training specializing in CAD Drafting or related technical field

•Experience using AutoCAD ideally in civil, water, and utility drafting and ideally GIS related experience

•AutoCAD training and experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D

•ArcGIS, ArcInfo, ArcView, Visual Basic, Word, Excel, and Access a plus

•Must possess good organizational, and oral and written communication skills

•Must be consistent and highly accurate in their work

•Adept in basic document and spreadsheet applications

•Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours if required

•Must pass drug test, background check and must have a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the Company’s driving (MVR) policy

Engineering Technician

The position you are viewing is located in the Bureau of Road Design in Topeka and serves the citizens of Kansas.This position is a full-time, unclassified position with benefits.

This is beginning level technical work in engineering and performed according to specific instructions and standards.Notes and details developed by the engineers or upper level technicians are carefully and accurately depicted on the plans using computer aided drafting software (CAD). This involves the appropriate selection of line weights, levels and symbols. This requires the employee to understand, describe and visualize basic geometric shapes. Uniformity and clarity is essential since a number of individuals will be working with the electronic files at various stages of the design process. Develop basic skills to become an Engineering Technician in the Road Section. The employee will participate in formal class room training as it becomes available, one-on-one training by staff in the design squad, and on-the-job training by completing actual work projects. This work includes CAD developed plan-profile and detail sheets. The employee will develop fundamental skills in the appropriate use of electronic files used during the design process.


•Received a passing grade in high school algebra course. You can self-certify by submitting a statement that you passed High School Algebra.
•Engineering Technology Degree preferred.Knowledge of mathematics, technical drafting, surveying, and road plan development procedures preferred.
•Some experience with CADD, 3D design, and basic PC operation is desirable.

Number of openings:



$13.61 per hour, depending on experience and/or skill level of applicant.

Jones Gillam Renz Architects, Inc. is seeking to fill an opening for a Draftsperson (Entry Level or Experienced). This position is Full-time, hourly pay, with potential for bonuses. Duties include, but are not limited to: Site visits, drafting plans, elevations, and details for a variety of different types and sizes of projects; Coordination of consultant’s drawings (Structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, etc.); Meeting and coordinating with clients, consultants, city and state entities, and contractors. Candidate must have a Degree in Drafting and must be proficient in AutoCAD. Experience in Microsoft Office & Adobe Programs is a plus. We are looking for a candidate that has a strong work ethic, is self-motivated, organized and hard-working. Also must have good problem-solving skills.
